BESTSELF™ ICEBREAKER | Beliefs 21

DESCRIBE A TIME WHEN IT’S RIGHT TO PURSUE POWER/MONEY OVER PEOPLE.

I’d like to think my answer to that question is “never,” but it would have to come with a few footnotes.

I believe that to care for others, you need the means to do so effectively, and at that point, it’s okay to pursue whatever it takes to provide for others. Everyone has a different skill set, and if yours will measurably benefit others, then do it, but keep focused on the who and the why and not the personal ambition and rewards.

John F. Kennedy (of whom I’m generally not a fan) is credited with popularizing the aphorism “a rising tide lifts all boats” to suggest that investing in economic development can benefit everyone who participates in the economy. The mental image of many different boats floating in a marina and being lifted equally by a rising tide is elegantly simple and would likely work if it were practiced. A true example of how theory and practice diverge.

I prefer to think a more utopian existence as shown by Gene Roddenberry in his Star Trek series, is the way to go. Given the current condition of the world, we are a long way away from that ever being a reality.

The only time it’s right to pursue power and money over people is when you are doing it to directly benefit those people.

In the meantime, I’ve chosen my charities based on my own life experience and give generously. I believe everyone has the right to potable water and I’m embarrassed by the cruel and selfish behaviour of my forebearers (and of Nestlé, too! - don’t get me started) and support Water First. For years I wanted to start my own foundation, but I’ve also learned that it’s best not to reinvent the wheel and concentrate my efforts with that of others who have better resources, expertise and experience. And, as I’ve mentioned before, due to my own past, I support Covenant House in Toronto for their efforts in caring for youth who find themselves on the streets with little or no support. There are other charities that I’m sure are valid and equally worthy, but I’d rather concentrate my efforts on those that resonate most strongly with me.
