I AM CURRENTLY | March 2021

REMEMBERING to breathe as I slowly remove safety nets. I have to remind myself that slow is a good thing and exactly what I need right now.

READING as many articles and books as I can about how women show up in the world. It started with Elizabeth Lesser’s talk which lead me to buy her book Cassandra Speaks as well as a number of the books she referenced. I find this invisible time in my life (a female past her prime and overweight) fascinating and it has piqued my interest in doing some research, one of my most favourite things to do.

LISTENING to the new AltRock playlist (my preferred genre) I’ve curated on Spotify. Right now I’m at 143 songs which comes in at 9 hours and 7 minutes. I’ve only just started! I know every word to every tune. So many great songs that bring back such specific memories. Isn’t music wonderful that way?

LOVING my new face masks from Lesley Hampton. The reality is face masks are going to be around for a good long while (at least they will for me), I might as well wear comfortable and stylish options. (Her selection is truly lovely, comfortable and they fit great!)

FINDING boundaries. Every once in a while I get a reminder of how far I’ve come and how far I have yet to go. Essentially, I learned that I do not have to be available to anyone on their time. I can make myself available on my own time. Recently someone trampled all over my space and my silence only seemed to provoke his worst instincts. How have I rediscovered my boundaries? I gave the issue over to someone who is not as triggered as I am by this nuisance.

WEARING new glasses! I’m so excited to have purchased some funky frames. My eyes require separate glasses as I’m both near- and far-sighted and the prescription is so different for each eye, I feel seasick with progressives. So now I have driving glasses, sunglasses, reading glasses and three pairs of work-on-the-computer-zoom-call glasses. So fun!

MISSING the ability to walk out my front door and be at ground level. This living on the 42nd floor is for the birds! Literally.

ENJOYING the bright and beautiful bouquet of loveliness sent to me by Chloé for UK Mother’s Day.

MAKING a list of the things I want to do when we (finally) move up and settle in Southampton. I know it’ll be a slow move up but I want to be sure to make the most of our time while we are there. Right now, I’m waiting for the floors to be installed – once in, the furniture can be put in place and we can settle in!

NOTICING the buds on the trees and the leaves poking up through the soil. I take the dogs out to the little park in the back of this massive building three or four times a day. Though the actual trees and gardens are unfamiliar to me, the transformation into spring is welcome.

WORKING on my submission for the New York Times “Modern Love” column. I promised Bill that I’d write and submit it. It’s hella hard to distill our 38 years to the required 1,700 words. I suppose that’s part of the challenge and the fun. I’m finished with the first draft and will let it sit on the printer to marinate a little bit for the next little while. I’ll look at it with fresh eyes in a couple of weeks. Then I’ll find an editor! (Let me know if you’re willing to help me out and give me feedback.)

EXPECTING things to be moving along with some pace at the renovation now that plenty of unsexy money has been spent on the unseen issues (electrical, vacuum, plumbing, etc.) Me? I’m learning that one thing leads to another and once something is open to the studs it’s the time to choose what to do. The biggest unplanned project – so far? New windows. My backyard plans may have to wait a while!

What about you? How are things in your world these days?
