BESTSELF™ ICEBREAKER | Beliefs 05
DESCRIBE A BELIEF YOU'D STILL HOLD TIGHT, EVEN IF SOMEONE SHOWED YOU EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY?
I am completely open to having someone change my mind if there is something wrong with my way of thinking. I can't think of any belief that I hold so tightly that I can't be swayed by a proof-filled argument. I'm very clear that I'm not always right, and I won't always get things right, and that's okay. I'm here to stay open, curious and learn new things.
I am open to having friends with differing opinions on serious taboo topics: politics, religion, sex, money (and music).
How boring would life be if you surround yourself only with those who believe the same things you do?
POLITICS: I lean left but that doesn't mean that there aren't valid ideas on the right that could and should be considered or incorporated.
RELIGION: That there is some pretty scary stuff. Religion is a social (patriarchal) construct, faith is your relationship with yourself and what you believe to be true - they are not the same thing. I am a spiritual, neo-pagan being. I believe there is something bigger "out there" - or "in here" depending upon your learning. I follow the more natural Wheel of the Year, I believe in the ebb and flow of the moon, tides and seasons. That said, I love sitting in a church with light streaming through the stained glass windows listening to the organ and choir.
SEX: Has always been one of my most favourite activities and I think everyone should enjoy it in whatever way that shows up for them. Don't judge me for what happens in my bedroom and I won't judge what happens in yours. I believe we are who we are and the most beautiful thing in the world is to show up, be seen and be accepted for all that you are - vulnerable, broken, healed, beautiful.
MONEY: Is a necessary evil and the way our economy is set up. I would prefer things to be more equitable but I also believe that if you stay within the rules and build a fortune, you are entitled to every penny. I know the playing field is not even, there are definite advantages to being white and male. All I've done is made sure my sons, both white and male, are aware of their privilege and use it for the betterment of all - use their voice for those who don't have one.
MUSIC: Then there are the softer, though often intense arguments about music, sports and entertainment. I primarily listen to Alt Rock and enjoy music from the '60s, '70s and '80s. I am not a fan of rap, though I will occasionally listen to Eminem; country music is awful, especially the old-fashioned twangy stuff, but I do enjoy the occasional Kenny Chesney or Garth Brooks; screamo is awful, and the rest is the rest. Or sports: I love hockey, football, baseball, golf, tennis and anything Olympics. Other than the Canadian Olympic teams, I don't cheer for any specific team - I like watching the games and learning about the players. With few remarkable exceptions, they're always changing teams anyway. Movies are fun and I often choose them by screenwriter, director and whether the title comes ahead of or after the name of the primary stars. I'm not interested in the lives of the actors or anyone else, but I do love watching what they wear to award shows!
If you feel compelled to convince me that my beliefs are wrong, sway me to change my mind - I'm completely open to it!
