AS A CHILD, WHAT RULES WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN? 

Absolutely none.

Not even bent.

That said, there were plenty of whispers and secrets. Most of the adults broke their rules regularly. The hypocrisy was palpable. The mixed messages confusing. The lies obvious.

I’ll never forget the humiliation of being corrected when I asked about my confusion.

I went back to my striving to be the perfect child, only to fail miserably at every turn.
