ICEBREAKER: WHAT IS ONE DISH YOUR PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS MAKE OR MADE THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD?
My “Nannie” (paternal grandmother) made the most wonderful egg sauce to put on poached salmon. I have not been able to find the recipe anywhere. In fact, she made the most wonderful food, everything was melt-in-your-mouth good. She was an equally good baker as she was a cook, a rare combination. My other grandmother (“Meme”) was a tremendous baker and made the most wonderful icebox ginger snaps.
GOING DEEPER: WHAT FAMILY TRADITION DID YOU THINK WAS WEIRD AS A KID BUT YOU NOW APPRECIATE? (OR VICE VERSA!)
I find most Hallmark Holiday traditions weird, they do not resonate with me. Not really family related, but as a kid, the one holiday I loathed in particular, was Valentine’s Day with each member of the class having a personalized envelope hung on the walls along the perimeter of the classroom. In those construction paper envelopes, little cards were deposited and then everyone counted them to see how popular they were by the number of valentines they got. Don’t get me wrong, I always had an overflowing envelope. It just made me uncomfortable for those who had less.
