LIST 03 | List the people, situations, and issues outside of yourself that you would like to build the bravery to tackle or face.
These are a smidge easier to share as it is about those things for which I have zero control – though I do have to buckle up to handle most external situations.
… I would like for others to walk their talk or at the very least recognize their hypocrisy – I know owning it would be too big an ask. Nothing is more maddening than those who do what they want while being in a position of telling others to do the opposite. We’ve suffered through a year of it and it really has to come to an end. The rules are for everybody – or nobody. If I could, I would do something about it in a big way. In the meantime, I do what I believe is best and shine a light on the crazy. And follow the rules.
… I would like for everyone to accept that everyone is entitled to their own stories and opinions. Decorum, a civilized and respectful discourse is always an option – and when it isn’t, agree to disagree and move on. All I can do is model the behaviour I’d like to see in others though I’d like to be more visible and a bit louder about it. I am far from perfect, even on my best days; but, I have done a lot of work to show up as the best version of myself possible. If I can do it, so can you – so can everyone.
… That said, opinion is not an educated thought – nor often is it even an informed thought. If you’re going to have an opinion, please have it based in something real. And by real, I mean provable by something tangible (data, statistics, precedent) – not provable or disprovable by opinion or what you think might be true. There is a time for gray, and a time for black and white. Truth of facts are often black and white, indisputable. I wish I had the patience and bravery to stop conversations when they are built on speculation and “facts” not in evidence. They are exhausting and frustrating.
The one thing the pandemic has done is reveal people for who they are at their core. Sometimes it’s a sad revelation, sometimes it’s a joy to behold. I’d like to be knowledgeable enough to be more visible, more engaged in the conversation.
