As much as I enjoy a blank calendar, the idea that there may just be nothing to do, I need to have a framework of how events are going to flow in my life. Having a sense of direction is critical to my peace of mind. Some years are more loose than others and I find with my children transforming miraculously – and far too quickly – into adults, my plans have to be open and flexible in order to accommodate their plans.
We have a big, full-to-bursting, year ahead with much to celebrate! The theme looks like: party, party, party. Or, at least there will be plenty of excuses for them.
WINTER | In a moment of lunacy, I agreed to let Chloé hold an all-grade after semi party in our home. | Chloé has to choose where she plans to attend university in September: options are in Canada and the UK. | Claire needs to apply to the program she wants to take in Toronto in September. | Pottery classes start for me. | I am hosting another Mum’s Lunch at a new venue. | Cole will turn 20. | Semi-annual check up with the Hematologist is scheduled. | Family Day holiday plans need to be made – or not. | Cole continues to diligently work at The Varsity and attend classes. | Chloé is giving her Chapel Speech. | Attending Unique Lives talks with my sister. | Caden is going on a Service Trip to Costa Rica as an S1 Leader. | In a leadership role, Chloé is heading to South Africa (fingers crossed all the paperwork comes in!) on an environmental science expedition. | I am taking more real estate courses with the plan to be done by the end of the year. | Cole is playing The Proprietor in the Sondheim musical “Assassins”.
SPRING | Caden has to decide what leadership positions he wants at school next year and, if he wants one, go through the application and interview process. | I will be hosting a third and final Mum’s Lunch of the school year. | Claire graduates from Queen’s with her degree in Art History. | Caden will turn 17. | Nineteen days later Chloé turns 18. | Chloé graduates from high school. | Parties must be planned! | I will have to book Claire’s graduation trip. | Claire needs to find a job that is flexible enough that she can continue when school starts in September. | We need to figure out Claire’s living situation starting in June (or earlier). | I am going back to Tucson with my sister. | Now that we know where Chloé is attending I can make plans for our next Winter Break. | Cole hopes to apply for Managing Editor or Features Editor for The Varsity and get one of the positions for next year.
SUMMER | Cole will be taking summer courses at UofT. | Caden will be taking math at summer school in an effort to collect as many math credits as he can before graduation. (In my day summer school was for remediation – not anymore!) | Cole will be working at a journalism internship if all goes to plan. | Caden might also find himself a job at one of the day camp programs in the area. Maybe Chloé, too? | So far we have no plans to go anywhere – it’s a stick-close-to-home summer which suits me fine. Over the summer, everyone leaves for Muskoka or Europe leaving our sleepy little town a little sleepier. Perfect! | I will turn 53. | Happy colonoscopy. | I’m awaiting registration as plans are to attend a writing retreat with Brian Henry back at Arowhon Pines.
AUTUMN | Back to school season for all four: Claire and Cole in Toronto, Chloé somewhere yet to be determined and Caden will be moving into boarding (a mandatory component at his school). | My last year of Mum’s Lunches will be organized. | Claire will turn 22. | Other than that, who knows? Autumn seems impossibly far away.
AMIDST IT ALL | I will be attending Wednesday and Friday Pranayama and Meditation with Jackie at iGita as often as possible. | I will be posting to the blog as consistently as I can, hopefully offering fun and uplifting content. | Power Hour with Heather Hannan will be attended up at the Joshua Creek Heritage Arts Centre. | Tucker will be walked and fed and groomed and well loved. | I will try new recipes. | My one little word: PLAY will be explored. | I will #rockyourhappy2017. | Doctor and dentist appointments will be had. | I will fully engage in my practice and keep what works and let go of what doesn’t. | I will play with my camera as much as possible, I miss taking photos. | I will make pages for my 2017 book using Cathy Zielske’s Scrapbook Your Year method. | I will participate in the annual Week In The Life project. | Every five weeks I will go to Euphoria for a haircut and Zenbar Healing Studio for pampering and maintenance. | Coffees, lunches and dinners with girlfriends will be enjoyed. | Book clubs will be joined and books will be read and who knows, maybe one written. | I will be more present on Instagram. | I will see more movies – alone or with friends. | With the help of Prüvit product, CZ’s FIT program, a lot of movement and keto-friendly eating, I will be taking better care of myself. | I will stay open to the prospect of a relationship and have come to welcome the idea of a companion.
As always, there is never a dull moment with four active almost-adults* and this fully-engaged mama.
