What emerged over the month?
TIRED. Maybe it’s simply the time of year when it is so dark so early and is still dark when I wake up. Maybe it’s U.S. election campaign fatigue, so ugly, let it be over soon. Maybe it’s cramming in so many social activities (and there were many)! This month I was sluggish and tired, every. single. day.
What were the big and small victories?
Appleby Homecoming was, as always, soggy. Good thing volleyball is played indoors. Caden’s varsity team won! | DriveWise has my final child to teach how to drive. | The Grampy and Nanna birthday party was a success. My sister and her family host great events. | Cole and I received our DNA tests back from ancestry.ca. It turns out I am Western European (55%), Ireland (32%), Great Britain (5%), Russia/Finland (5%), Scandinavia, Iberian Peninsula and Italy/Greece (all 1%). So much for being all Celt! | The Blue Jays made it into the Wildcard game and beat the Orioles to make it into the ALCS! | A quick week after meeting with the doctor I was in for an ultrasound on my hand. | Thanksgiving Weekend with three extra bodies made for a full four days. Chloé was a great host taking everyone apple picking, to the movies, to mini putt and to watch Cole perform in Peter Pan in Toronto. | I so enjoy being back at Kundalini meditation. Even better? Claire joined me twice this month. | Thanks to Whole Foods and the Butcher on Lakeshore for providing our feast. Fortino’s, too! | Cole bought a carrot cake from Carole’s in Yorkville and brought it in on the GO train. The boy knows how to make his mama happy! | I finished Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty. So good. | Auston Matthews had a stellar first game of his rookie season with the Leafs: 4 goals! | I joined Lorraine and Virginia to paint bowls for charity over at Crack Pot Studio. I hadn’t been there since the kids were little. I may have to go back. | Published! I had a little essay on Tucker up on Quick Brown Fox. So exciting! | Caden and friends went up to Canada’s Wonderland for the annual Hallowe’en Haunt to celebrate a birthday for one of the girls in his group. | Appleby Open Houses have started and as Head Student Ambassador, Chloé was on top of her game. | Sister dinner (at Jonathan’s, of course) then sleepover followed by a 9AM birthday party – for me! | Full (super) moon decision time – not so much to let go at this point. | I was given a Bonsai Tree. I never knew I wanted one until I opened the bag. Love it! | Windows cleaned – just in time for the rain! | Volleyball in Hamilton is so much easier to access than games in Toronto. LOVE the gym at Hillfield Strathallan. Though, not happy our boys lost. | Learning about insurance. Forms, forms, forms. | ALCS had Toronto vs Cleveland. Great ball, but the Jays lost in 4. Next year? | The annual Appleby Walkathon had all of the students but mine from the school walking 21km through the town. | I had a blast at my first visit to the Moonshine Cafe. I plan to return. | Irrigation system was flushed out and summer is officially over. | “Hamilton” on PBS had to be recorded as I drove Claire into downtown Toronto (Spadina & Queen) on a Friday night. Eek! Watched it later. Brilliant! | Autumn Photo Walk was a fun afternoon spent capturing our beautiful downtown with Helen and Grace. | Crescent came to Appleby and it looks like Appleby may be eliminated from playoffs. Gotta wait for others games to determine. | Power Hour with Heather Hannan was fascinating. Bonus: karmic ancestral cords were addressed and removed. I can feel the difference. | I hosted the first mums lunch of the year over at Alice Fazooli’s. Looking forward to the next one! | UNB reception at Glen Abbey Golf Club was attended by me, with Chloé and Julia. So much fun being welcomed in such a small group who were happy to let the girls know the advantages of going to UNB. | Claire got her bottom braces put on. Now for the real test – the waiting. | Chloé hosted a party for 40+ in the basement. 11PM pizza was a hit! Everyone was gone by 12:30 and the mess was 100% clean early the next day. | My New Moon intentions and ritual are well entrenched in my practice. It’s time to let in a few things. | Chloé was selected to give a Chapel Speech at school. She has from now until mid-February to prepare. | Cole has announced he wants to spent his Winter Break in Standing Rock. Further discussion is required. | The little and big trick-or-treaters are so much fun! We had 11 at the house this year while Caden was off with friends in Mississauga. He gets all of the leftovers.
What were the lessons?
I completely forgot to re-license the cars and had to pay the increased fees. Next time I’ll be my usual punctual self! | What a shit show the US election has become. Trump is hopeless. Lets just fast-forward to November. Please! | Chloé’s phone has been dying a slow death and finally became completely useless. Hello brand new iPhone 6s. (wallet setback) | Peeyew, is all anyone can say with Tucker being skunked – twice! | Caden was so hoping his October visit to the orthodontist was going to be his last. It was not to be. Probably sometime in the new year. The boy is frustrated. | Ingrown toenails are going to be Chloé’s forever issue. She’s been referred to a chiropodist. Chloé has opted to take the winter term to have her feet fixed as surgery is surely in her future. | Western Homecoming was a complete shit show for both of my girls. | Chloé opted out being in the chorus in the school musical this year – time better spent focusing on her studies. | Caden tore some ligaments in his ankle. Ouch! He’ll be on crutches for a while so I bought him some fancy new ones that will hopefully this time more bearable. | Fashion show fittings are underway. By Tocca (a snooty store in downtown Oakville) decided to body shame a teenager who was *gasp* a size 8. Disgusting.
It’s all about The Wheel of the Year and celebration of the corresponding Sabbat. And ALL of my kids are on board. When did that happen? I’m running with it!
ENJOYING EVERYDAY LIFE
Great quote: “When you meet a woman who is intimidatingly witty, stylish, beautiful and professionally accomplished, befriend her. Surrounding yourself with the best people doesn’t make you look worse by comparison. It makes you look better.” Nora Ephron
What we watched and enjoyed: Blue Jays baseball! It was great up until it was over. Now we’re cheering the Cubs. Normally I’d cheer for the team that beat our Blue Jays – after all, they would have to be the better team! – but this time I have to break with the norm and cheer for the Cubs. When will I have a chance to cheer them again? I’ll catch up on all other shows when live sports are over.
Books found on my nightstand: Uncharted by Colette Baron Reid has been taking up much of my attention (and is filling with pink highlighter!). I did just receive Notes from a Blue Bike by Tsh Oxenreider, How to Live a Good Life by Jonathan Fields and Atlas Obscura by Joshua Foer, Dylan Thuras & Ella Morton and look forward to delving into both!
Music that had me moving and singing along: Packed Powder by Blind Pilot, Habit by Gabrielle Shonk, Amelia by Skott, You & I by Colony House, Hole in my Soul by Kaiser Chiefs, Fall by Emily Hearn, Please Don’t Go by Joel Adams, Somebody Else by The 1975 (song starts at 3 minute mark), The Way it Is by Nicole Adkins and Hurts by Emeli Sandé.
Weather: Autumn has arrived! It is clear the drought of the summer has affected the usual splendorous display of colour. The leaves look more yellow and burnt than coloured – almost no red! It’s been blustery and wet then unseasonably warm and now we’re back from that teaser and autumn has arrived.
Unexpected: I got clearance from my hematologist to get a tattoo! I know exactly what I’m getting. Now to work up the nerve to head over to Paris Ink so Phil can work his magic! | From the “never say never” files: again I am taking supplements recommended by a friend to address my excess weight. I don’t know if it’s working the way it’s meant to but for some miraculous reason I have much less hip pain!
Discovery: Tucker got skunked – twice. Lucky for me, I can’t smell him, but everyone else can! The best part is that we have found a wonderful groomer who takes such good care of him and totally gets the idea that cleaning out his ears means CLEANING OUT HIS EARS. | It turns out a group of scientists have determined that Weightless by Marconi Union is the most relaxing tune ever recorded. It is 8 minutes – and there is another 9+ HOUR version. I have to say, not bad. I’ve been playing it as I go to sleep and like it.
WTF: Standing Rock. Why is this happening? My heart is breaking over the blatant injustice. Sad and dangerous times. Not one mention during the presidential campaign in the U.S. – sickening.
Exhale: Claire has a rough idea of what her future plans will be. The one thing for sure is, after visiting the woman at career counseling, she is going back to school. That was a huge ah-ha. Now to decide the direction.
Projects: I found a new venue for our ladies lunches and have already booked for January. | Getting all of the pruning done. Such a brutal summer for the big trees on the property. | I am not a fan of our back deck. The wood is starting to break apart and the top deck is not integrated well with the bottom walk-out. Time to fix it. | The master bathroom – one step forward, ten steps back. Beyond time to just get the shower fixed! | Curtains. I need real curtains in my living/dining room and family room.
