LIST 25 | List all the companions, be they human or animal, from your past that have had a calming influence on your life.
I have not had a lot of calming influences, certainly not in the first 50 years of my life. The idea of peace and calm was tantamount to failure; and worse, boredom. After all, isn’t drama and one crisis after the next more interesting and fun? Doesn’t it show you that people are engaged and care about you?
No, it was exhausting.
There has been a big purge as well as a re-evaluation. All of those people who were in my life and part of the drama and crazy who have evolved, as I have, are still in my life. Those who continue to stir it up while looking for gossip, blame and finger-pointing are gone. I’ve curated a lovely group of supportive and kind friends (some who are family) who have seen me at my worst and know that I’m working on showing up as my best, every day. After all, we all show up and do our best, right?
Even at that, there is no avoiding some of the drama queens in my life. I’ve done enough work on myself (after all, I’m the only one I can control) and I am able to stay as calm as I can when put in stressful situations. I am good at counting to 10, over and over again. It’s a wonder my tongue is still attached.
The most calming companions in my world right now are my two pups, a couple of sweet girlfriends and my partner in business and life. Not only are they calming, but they also bring out the best in me. What could be better than that?
Other “companions” that encourage calm are my journal, the “notes” feature on my iPhone, the iAwake meditation app and sleep headphones, my Spotify playlists, sitting outside to read, and permission to rest when I’m tired.
