LIST 11 | List the feelings and thoughts that come up when you are avoiding something or procrastinating.
I am a natural percolator of ideas and projects. Most things that don’t get done have nothing to do with avoidance or procrastination – simple volume is my problem. On my daily list of priorities, the constant operation of the house and care for those in it, take precedence over cleaning my piles of paper and books in my office – which is what I complain the most about! I’d far rather write or read after finishing the laundry and dishes.
Over the past decade or so, I’ve made a focused effort to not avoid hard conversations or difficult situations. Indeed, I know that on the other side of those conflicts will be only good things. The elephant in the room is simply an opportunity to learn and grow. I am not always successful. Certainly, the more people you let into your circle the more opportunity there is for struggle and complication. I’ve learned that more times than not, letting people in is worth it.
I suppose my feelings and thoughts come down to acceptance. I have a full life and sometimes my priorities reflect what I want to do at the time – sometimes they get stuck in what worked while I move toward what is working now.
